Gold and Silver in an IRA: The Basics

What a precious metals IRA is, which coins and bars may qualify, and why metals must be held by a custodian.

A self-directed IRA can hold certain gold and silver bullion that meets IRS fineness rules, but the metal must be held by an approved trustee or custodian, not at home. Talk to a custodian and tax adviser before opening one.

Which metals qualify?

The tax code allows certain bullion meeting minimum fineness, plus specific U.S. coins such as American Eagles. Your custodian decides what it accepts.

Can I keep IRA gold at home?

Generally no. IRA metals must be held by the trustee or an approved depository.

Do you offer IRAs?

We sell bullion directly to buyers. We do not act as an IRA custodian.
