Gold Karats and Purity Explained: 22k vs. 24k
How karats and fineness work, what .9167 and .9999 mean, and how purity affects gold coins and bars.
Karats measure gold purity out of 24. 24-karat gold is about .999 fine or higher; 22-karat gold is .9167 fine. A 22k bullion coin can still contain a full troy ounce of fine gold.
What does .9999 mean?
It means 99.99% pure gold. Many modern bullion coins and bars are .9999 fine.
Why are some coins 22-karat?
Alloy metals such as copper or silver make the coin harder and more scratch-resistant. The coin is made slightly heavier so it still contains its stated fine gold.
Is 24k always better?
Not for bullion value. What matters is fine gold content and price. 24k coins are softer and scratch more easily.
