The Gold-to-Silver Ratio Explained

What the gold-to-silver ratio measures, how to calculate it, and what it can and cannot tell a buyer.

The gold-to-silver ratio is the gold price divided by the silver price. It shows how many ounces of silver equal one ounce of gold. It is a comparison tool, not a forecast.

How do I calculate it?

Divide the gold spot price by the silver spot price. For example only, gold at $2,400 and silver at $30 gives a ratio of 80.

Does a high ratio mean silver will rise?

No. The ratio has varied widely over time and does not predict future prices.

How do buyers use it?

Some buyers use it to decide how to split purchases between metals. It is one piece of context, not advice.
